Marble – topped table and chairs aside from those comfy plush seats, flower lamps, sepia photos of coffee and food… it’s a classic set – up of old time kopitiam, topped with old time kopitiam menu of kopi and toast, half – boiled eggs, nasi lemak, noodles and a variety of fusion drinks, it’s a perfect place to chill with a light munch. It’s just plain classic, like the old time of our parents but with modern comfort.
I just had their Old Town curry mee and Enrich Chocolate drink, and boy I think I’m in love already! The thick curry with the dried tofu, slices of chicken and fishcake, taugeh (bean sprouts) and long beans over the yellow mee is simply divine, especially with a dash of lime. The cold, creamy, thick chocolate drink is another plus point. And I simply love their Javanese mee and Tom Yam Siam mihun and nasi lemak and nasi with the succulent rendang chicken! But of course, the love of my life (one of the many) is their mee kari @ curry mee. This is one of the rare places in Kota Kinabalu where you can find curry mee, and a nice one to boot.
Since it’s a kopitiam, there is a variety of coffee for the coffee drinkers, and Cham if you want an additional dose of caffeine, since Cham is a concoction of coffee and tea. It gave me palpitation though when I tried it, and I didn’t particularly like it since I’m not a coffee drinker. I ordered it under peer influence, foolishly thinking that the taste of tea would dilute that of coffee. Well, it didn’t.
There’s a variety of toasts on the menu, aside from the typical kaya (coconut “marmalade”) and butter toasts. Mind you a kopitiam usually have its own signature bread and kaya. A typical kopitiam breakfast / meal would include coffee, toasts with kaya and butter, and half boiled egg with a dash of soya sauce and/or white pepper. Some would rather be slurping their favourite noodles over politics and world events. A heavier meal would be the nasi lemak.
In conclusion, you can come eat here anytime, and eat anything.
