My Penang Solo Stumble 10 ~ Along the Esplanade of Padang Kota Lama, Georgetown

The Esplanade during the day would be crowded with families and elderly who came here fro a breath of sea air at the nearby park. On festival days which are abundant here in Malaysia (we seems to think of one new celebration after another each year) the Esplanade would burst with vibrant colours (and litters later) and happy crowd and music and what not. Nights would be filled with hungry locals and tourists looking for famous Penang tasty bites.

Two magnificent buildings stood proud in all their glory on the ground of Esplanade.

The Town Hall was built in 1879, exuding classic and elegant aura with its Western architectural style with classical arches, columns and pilaster.  The yellow double-storey building is the oldest municipal building in Penang. In 1999, the building’s ballroom on the first floor was used for the filming of 20th Century Fox’s blockbuster, Anna and the King.

The City Hall opened in 1903, is currently occupied by the local council. It was built in 1903 itself, serving as the Municipal Office while the Town Hall was used for parties and functions. I think that’s not a bad concept, you work your ass off during the day and then head off to party next door. Anyway, the City Hall was gazette on 29 July 1982, under the Antiquities Act 68/1976, as an Ancient Monument and Historic Site.

Another view of the Esplanade from the side of Lebuh Light. Pretty nice walkway for a stroll in the heart of Georgetown.
