Budget Travel @ Sabah 08 ~ Atkinson Clock Tower

Situated along the Signal Hill road is the clock tower from the year 1903.

Quoting from Sabah Tourism…
“It is an all-wood, no-nails structure was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson - the popular first District Officer of Jesselton during the British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration, who had succumbed to a tropical disease at the young age of 28.

This Clock Tower has the distinction of being the oldest standing structure in the whole of Sabah that survived the destruction of Jesselton town during World War II. Till today, it still serves to keep the city's time.”

I don’t really think it’s a good idea to climb uphill by foot as the website may suggest, wiser to get a cab or drive upwards from the entrance at Padang Merdeka (above).

Further up is a viewing area of the city. This is probably as high as you can get from the city surface. The area oversees the city and bay, views at sunset can be breath taking. Parking can be a problem here as limited spaces are available.

Go here if you feel like seeing the city view from a hilltop. Not to say that you’ll miss anything if you don’t do so.  No eatery or public bathroom around.
